I was walking around the town nearest where I live – it’s very much set in the victorian / edwardian style when it comes to housing stock. There are some massive former council housing estates – some social housing is held by the local housing association and those have been brough up to date as much as funds can allow. They have central heating and a few mod cons but nothing luxurious. When you grow up, depending on the kind of family you come from, you will either go stright for buying your first home, or you will rent. In this day and age with mortgages being more of a challenge to acquire, the emphasis will be heavily on rental for some years. Getting the right house for the money is critical. It must be safe, dry, legally available for rent or purchase, and be affordable.
